Assessment Process

How can I bypass prerequisite courses?

You may register for the instruction bypass option.

You will be asked to do 3-4 practical application tasks, so that that we can assess your work. The tasks we ask you to do will be based on the exercises and assignments from the course.

The cost of bypassing a course will be 75% of the list price of the course.

Contact us and indicate which course or courses you would like to bypass. We will get back to you with additional information.

How will the assessment process work?

You will skip watching the instructional videos and go straight to a set of assignments based on the exercises and assignments from the course. Our assignment reviewer will provide feedback on your work, as he or she would do for a student of the course. In this way, minor gaps in your knowledge and skills can be discovered and filled.

How is this different from taking the course?

You will not have access to the normal instructional part of the course – the video material.

This approach is only intended for people who have studied the Dialogue Mapping book or other online resources on IBIS mapping and believe that they already know how to do IBIS and/or use Compendium for IBIS mapping.

Will I get a certificate of completion if I use the bypass option?

Yes, if you complete all of the assignments and the reviewer believes, from assessing your work, that you have the necessary skills and knowledge, you will be given a certificate of completion for that course which will allow you to proceed to courses for which that one was prerequisite.

Why is there a cost for assessment?

Assessment will require at least the same amount of review time as it will for someone taking the course. The fee will cover the instructor’s time for assessment and feedback on your work, including remedial information, as well as providing you with the reference material that is provided with the course, including guidelines, supporting material, etc.

What if I need more instruction than just the review feedback?

Should the assessment show significant gaps in knowledge and skills, you may convert from the bypass option to taking the course by paying the additional 25%. This will give you access to all instructional videos for the course, as well as the class maps for the Compendium courses.

What is the rationale behind the bypass approach?

We have heard that you read the Dialogue Mapping book, by Dr. Jeff Conklin, or watched the videos from Paul Culmsee and do not want to do “basic” training because you think it will be repetitive with what you already know.

In the time since the book was published, we have developed a better understanding of the specific skills required to do Dialogue Mapping, and how those skills need to be built up over time and with practice. We are using a new sequence for introducing the concepts, and some new terminology, all with the goal of ensuring that the foundation is solidly in place before creating our Dialogue Mapping ‘building’ on top of it.

Since the available material outside of our training program, while quite useful, is not necessarily a complete set, and since each individual picks up different things as ‘important’, some type of assessment of both skills and knowledge is necessary to be sure that you have the foundation needed for later courses.
